On Tuesday, February 13, 2007, I heard Owen Bailey with the Sierra Club present a passionate plea at the general meeting for Malibu Association of REALTORS. In the handout titled "3 Ways to Help Stop the BHP Billiton Offshore LNG Terminal", he encouraged everyone to "(1) attend the State Lands Commission and Coast Guard Hearings; (2) send emails to the editors at the five local newspapers including LATimes.com, VenturaCountyStar.com,MalibuSurfsideNews.com, MalibuTimes.com and VCReporter.com [Ventura County Reporter]" and most importantly (3) "send hand written letters to State Lands Commissioners".
Malibu, California and Oxnard, California support the opposition — "No" to the proposed floating LNG [Liquefied Natural Gas] terminal – "approximately 14 miles offshore the Ventura and Los Angeles County line near Leo Carrillo State Beach and the Malibu City Limit". There are several issues involved including air pollution, global warming impact, sea life impact, safety issue surrounding proposed gas lines and much more.
For additional information, mailto:Owen.Bailey@SierraClub.org. Bailey also gave 3 websites for additional resources: http://www.coastaladvocates.com, http://www.edcnet.org, and http://sierraclub.org/ca/coasts. Bailey also has additional copies of the September 8, 2006 article titled "The Cabrillo Port: Get the Facts on BHP Billiton’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Proposal for the Oxnard/Malibu Coast." This article specifies that LNG is not "clean fuel" rather that "LNG, like oil or coal, is a finite fossil fuel."
