Malibu & Other Santa Monica Bay beaches cleaned!

Beach Cleanup draws more volunteers than in over a decade

Environmental group "Heal the Bay" lead the clean up of Malibu and other Santa Monica and Los Angeles beaches as part of the international Coastal Clean Up Day last Saturday (15th September 2007.)

More than 50 sites in the area were cleaned with as reported on Heal the Bay’s website, over 11,000 volunteers! Who collectively amassed over 70,000lbs of trash and over 5,500lbs of recyclable’s.

The clean up effort in part of the worldwide effort to promote environmental protection, locally the event is part of the state and local municipalities protecting and preserving the scenic coastline - Heal the Bay estimate that 60 nations participate and all states in the US with a coastline also get involved. Clean Up Day is held annually on the third Saturday in September and was first held in 1985.

Across the state it is estimated that last years record of just over 50,000 volunteers may have been broken, which is excellent news.

This again shows what great lengths the community in the area go to protecting its most valuable asset. Its coastline & beaches.
