Malibu Emergency Services Formulate Action Plans For Future Fire Threats

Local Authority Devising Emergency Plans for preparedness

With the recent spate of fires in Malibu the emergency services are working on plans which would be able to alert residents of up-coming danger easily in future emergencies.

Brad Davis is the City’s Emergency Preparedness Director who is formulating a strategy to alert residents and help make the reaction to emergencies more efficient. He says that in the reaction to the recent fires the local fire department and sheriffs offices responded well as did local residents who generally heeded the local Fire Chief’s warning that due to the climate the area should prepare for a year round fire season.

Currently the existing warning system by the Sheriffs department uses telephone lines which could - in the event of an emergency - be down. The plan is to propose a more comprehensive alert system that would be able to contact people by other methods such as email, text messaging and more.

Having an evacuation plan of course is a necessity for residents who have responded well in evacuation calls in the recent fires in Corral Canyon.

The bottom line is that whilst this proposed new system is being developed residents should ensure that they have a good evacuation plan as well as methods of contacting family and friends in the event of an emergency.

There are local Community Emergency Response Team Seminars being held and residents are encouraged to attend - the next round are January 22nd through to February 12th every Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6.30-9pm at City Hall.
