The Hollywood Reporter June 4th, 2011 article notes that the Malibu, California real estate market is heating up in both sale purchases and leases.  There are several notable properties on the market that includes several celebrities as well as unique spectacular property location.  Chad Rogers at Hilton and Hyland is quoted in the article as saying “This market is value-driven. Duke’s Restaurant is a landmark here in Malibu, California – oceanfront dining that is one of the Malibu “must-sees” to anyone visiting Malibu.  The food is delicious, the ambience superb — what can I say, if you love Hawaii then you will love Duke’s. 

On March 20th, 2011 – a memorable day for the annual Los Angeles Marathon -it become an indelible date in Duke’s history book too.

Today the Yahoo Times announces the largest home sale has just taken place in San Francisco area — namely in Los Altos, California.

Russian billionaire Yuri Milner reportedly paid $100 million for a 25,500 square foot living area home up in Los Altos, California.  He is a majority shareholder in Facebook,  Groupon and Farmville.  Here is a brief comment about “Milner, the 49-year-old founder of Internet investment firm Digital Sky Technologies and chairman of Mail.ru Group, has no immediate plans to move into the mansion, spokesman Leonid Solovyev told The AP. Solovyev and another spokesman for the billionaire declined any further comment.”

Additionally, the same article exudes comments by Betty Graham as follows:

“The mansion’s price tag dwarfs the $50 million paid for the three-story, 48,000-square-foot Le Belvedere mansion in Bel Air last year, said Betty Graham, president of Coldwell Banker Previews International, which listed that property. Graham said the number of homes that sold for more than $20 million last year in the Los Angeles area tripled from 2009, a sign that the luxury market has been strengthening.

“The smart money is back in real estate,” Graham said.”

In Malibu, California – the luxury homes above $10 million had the following activity in 2009 and 2010 had the following activity according to the Multiple Listing Service:

2009:  6 beachfront homes closed escrow in the final sales price that ranged from $10,600,000 to $17,500,000

2009: 2 land side homes closed escrow in the final sales price that ranged from  $12,000,000 to $13,443,800

2010:  8 beachfront homes closed escrow in the final sales price that ranged from $10,988,845 to $21,475,000

2010: 2 land side homes closed escrow in the final sales price that ranged from $11,500,000 to $13,500,000.

There are higher sales quietly reported that are not in the Multiple Listing Service.  One concludes that in Malibu, California – luxury home sales above $10 million is up 30 percent.

Just look at this photo — and enjoy the Malibu, California vibe.  Where else can we enjoy the cool beach weather almost all year round consistently?  So many choices, but the main reason we live here is to enjoy this precious asset – the beach.

Malibu has enjoyed another unexpected visitor in her waters all last week – it was Paul Allen’s Octopus yacht.  He purchased it in 2003 for over $200 million and reportedly costs $20 million annually to maintain.  A 60 person crew mans this yacht which includes several former Navy Seals.

Octopus has “two helicopters, seven boats, a 10 man submarine and a remote controlled vehicle for crawling on the Ocean floor. The submarine has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks underwater.”

It must be nice to be able to choose whether to sleep in his Carbon Beach private residence or sleep on the Pacific Ocean in the Octopus.  Sweet!

Malibu - Kayak Time!

Finally as of August 14, 2010, summer has finally arrived in Malibu, CA.  The weather has been unusually cold out here – the residents have wondered “are we really in summer or is this the late May weather” that we are experiencing.  Our mornings have been foggy but it clears by mid-afternoon and we are able to enjoy the sunshine until 7:30 at night.

Malibu is 27 miles long and the weather varies depending on where one is located on the same day. It is possible for West Malibu to experience the sun in the afternoon where temperatures are a cool 72 degree as compared to the Point Dume area where fog clings along the coast and the temperatures linger around 65 degree.  Then the central Malibu brightens again with some sun and the temperature becomes 72 degree and the east Malibu again has some fog for the temperatures to linger around 65 degree.  I just want to show my guests that Malibu has the bluest water and drop dead gorgeous ocean views but it has been challenging when summer dragged her feet.  Of course I have neglected to mention that we are still 20 degrees cooler than the Valley areas so really no complaints.

I am happy to report that finally the summer sunshine will bask in her glory throughout all Malibu from mid August – absolutely gorgeous!  I have seen the coastline in along California but there is nothing like our Malibu coastline and calling it home!

So now is the time to come out and enjoy all the water sports and just lie on the beach and bask in the beauty.  It is even better if you call Malibu, My Home.

394 foot Yacht coasts along the Malibu Pier in Malibu, CA

This past Wednesday – August 11, 2010 – Malibu, CA experienced a new visitor off the coastline.  The town was buzzed with rumors of whose white yacht was floating off the Malibu Pier – anyone driving into Malibu was mesmerized by this unusual sight in the water.

It was the 394 foot yacht as owned by the Russian Billionaire Andrey Melnichenko.  I was able to take the photo from Carbon Beach as well as the Malibu Pier to obtain both the side view as well as the rear view.

Wall Street Journal had reported on this $300 million Philippe Starck designer creation back on April 23, 2010.  Some of the highlights noted include a fingerprint security system [it feels as though the cartoon series “Jetson's” has become a reality] and “it has 44 security cameras and more than a dozen exterior cameras fitted with motion-detection systems and a night-vision infrared system” [Hello James Bond!].

It further reports that it takes about 35 to 37 crew members which includes “stewards, stewardesses, mechanical engineers, security staff, housekeepers, deck hands, galley crew and chefs as well as specialists for surfing, jet skiing, water skiing and cycling.”  “The boat costs over $20 million a year to maintain; filling the gas tank costs more than $500,000.”

Andrey Melnichenko’s yacht is nice for a short novelty but it belongs in different waters – I am thinking that the waters in either Tahiti or Bali or Fiji are more suitable for this work of art.  I am looking forward to the beauty of the Malibu coast returning without this unusual art in the waters.  Undoubtedly the sea creatures would agree unanimously.
